Obtaining Mexican born baby's US passport in Mexico

Easy Guide to Getting a US Passport for Your Baby in Mexico

If you’re a US citizen and had your baby in Mexico, here’s a simple step-by-step guide on how to get your baby’s US passport. Your baby will also have dual citizenship, meaning they will be a citizen of both Mexico and the United States.

Step 1: Apply for the Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA)

Before you can apply for a passport, you need to first apply for the Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA). You can do this online at:
CRBA Application

Cost: $100

Once you’ve completed the CRBA application and paid the fee, you can apply for the passport at the same appointment as the CRBA. This allows you to complete both processes at once, saving time and extra visits to the consulate.

Step 2: Gather Documents for the CRBA Appointment

Make sure you have the required documents for your CRBA appointment. You can find the checklist here:
CRBA Checklist

Step 3: Complete Passport Application

After your CRBA is processed, you’ll need to complete a passport application. Gather the necessary documents as listed on the website, including:

  • The CRBA
  • Proof of US citizenship for both parents
  • Baby’s birth certificate (from Mexico)
  • Parent’s identification documents

You can find the checklist for the passport appointment here:
Passport Appointment Checklist

Step 4: Prove Your US Residence for the Last 5 Years

You’ll need to show proof that you’ve lived in the US for the last 5 years. Some examples of documents you can use include:

  • W-2 forms
  • Tax returns
  • Bank statements
  • Utility bills
  • School records
  • Car registration
  • Rental contracts or property deeds

Step 5: Attend the Interview

Once you have all the required documents, you will attend an in-person interview at the US embassy or consulate. Make sure to bring everything needed, including copies of your documents.

Emergency Passport Option

If you need an emergency passport, you will need to provide proof of urgent travel. This means booking flights and bringing your printed flight confirmation to your appointment. Emergency passports are typically issued much faster but may have restrictions, so check with the embassy for details.

Once the process is complete, your baby will have a US passport and can enter the US as a US citizen!
